Entertainment and Digital Trends to Watch This Year

Recently, I found myself squashed into a Mumbai local, squinting at highlights of a cricket match on my phone. It struck me: India’s digital pulse is now its entertainment heartbeat. With over 954 million internet users tapping away on everything from news to nail-art tutorials, our screens have never been more alive.

Who isn’t bingeing the latest drama or scrolling through dance challenges in Pune, Patna or Puducherry? Streaming, social platforms, and online lottery tickets are examples of how digital media is transforming leisure time. It’s that simple.

Yet, this isn’t only about catching up on a hit series.

Beyond Binge

The boom in regional storytelling has been uncanny. Many over-the-top platform releases now arrive in local tongues, from Maithili mysteries to Marathi rom-coms. It’s not just lip service—viewers are craving content that speaks to their neighbourhoods, their dad’s accent, their own street-food stalls.

At the same time, hyper-local ads whisper inside episodes: a silken saree from a Chennai boutique or a chai brand from Lucknow. It feels intimate, as if the showrunners peeked out your window before crafting each line.

Short-form video has its own magic. The untrained dancer in a Delhi chawl can become tomorrow’s TikTok star, simply by nailing that trending beat. Brands are chasing these nano-influencers—micro-moments that feel friendlier than a scripted ad break.

Interactive Play

Gaming, long seen as a niche, has exploded. From live quiz shows on mobile apps to virtual fairs where you swipe for a prize, the line between spectator and participant blurs. This shift highlights a growing demand for immersive and engaging experiences that go beyond passive consumption.

And then there’s live commerce, where a host demos cookware in real-time and you tap “buy” before you know it. It’s part sales pitch, part buddy talk—so conversational that you forget you’re shopping. This trend thrives on genuine human connection, making the shopping experience feel personal and authentic.

The Next Wave

If you think this is all old hat, wait. AI is popping up behind the scenes, picking your next show, even writing quippy plot lines for social media.

While pilot projects exist, virtual reality cinemas aren’t yet widespread in cities like Bangalore. But they promise that old-school ‘big screen’ thrill without the sticky floors. So expect a lot more interactive tech giving a cheeky twist to entertainment.

Augmented reality layers filters on mid-air cricket catches and gives museum tours in remote districts. And yes, a few experimental projects let you “meet” a superstar avatar for a selfie—awkward yet oddly alluring.

So, what’s really on the horizon? Expect deeper personalisation (you’ll get trailers hand-picked by algorithms that know you better than your cousin does), more language mash-ups, and micro-festivals hosted entirely online.

It feels a bit wild, I admit. But also thrilling. We’re living through a time when our home screen is our new front row, and every swipe might reveal something that leaves us grinning, gasping or googling the next binge.
